DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman sophomores Terrance Hackney and LeBrandon
Richardson were named to the Boxtorow All-America Football Team announced
Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, Wildcats Isidore Jackson and Jarkevis Fields
picked up honorable mention accolades.
Hackney, a product of
Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Hargrave Military Academy, transferred into
Bethune-Cookman from Ole Miss. The All-America team recognition is the third of
its kind on the 2012 campaign for Hackney, a 6-6, 310-pound offensive lineman
who also claimed MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year honors following the
regular season.
On the year, Hackney helped anchor the Bethune-Cookman offensive line unit that paved the way
for a league-leading 4,665 yards of total offense. That total includes a
league-leading 2,928 yards on the ground. Hackney's blocking exploits were
instrumental in placing Bethune-Cookman atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference (MEAC) in scoring offense (29.4 points per game).
As for Richardson, the 6-2, 255-pound defensive
lineman from Miami is making his way onto his first All-America team after
finishing the year sixth on the Wildcats squad for total tackles, collecting 53
on the campaign - 26 of them via solo performance. The UCF transfer and Miami
Central alum sparked the Wildcats defense with a team-leading 13 tackles behind
the line, including a team-best 8.5 sacks. He also recovered two fumbles, one
going for a score against Tennessee State in a 44-yard return.
The Bethune-Cookman defense ended the year third
in the MEAC for total defense, as well as seventh nationally at an average of
301.42 yards per game allowed. The Cats allowed just an average of 134.8 yards
per contest on the ground throughout the season, and a pass efficiency grade of
98.8, pitting them in the top three of the league in both categories as well.
That goes along with having the league's best defense on third downs, getting
off the field 69.5 percent of the time. The takeaways for the Wildcats allowed
them to finish ranked third nationally with a +1.50 margin against their
counterparts.
As a team, the Wildcats won the 2012 MEAC title -
the fifth of its kind in school history - after recording an unblemished record
of 8-0 in the league, advancing to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision
(FCS) Playoffs for the second time under head coach Brian Jenkins, recently
completing his third year at the helm in Daytona Beach. Overall, the Cats have
won two of the last three MEAC crowns.
Winston-Salem
State placed four on the 2012 Boxtorow All-American team. Among them was
quarterback Kameron Smith the Boxtorow Offensive Player of the Year. Alabama
State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State, and Tennessee State each placed
three players on the team.
Arkansas-Pine
Bluff defensive end Brandon Thurmond was the Boxtorow Defensive Player of the
Year.
Boxtorow
has selected an All-America team since 2007 and the voters are media members
from around the nation that cover HBCU football.
For
the second-straight year, Winston-Salem State head football coach Connell
Maynor has been named Boxtorow Coach of the Year. Maynor led the Rams to their
second-straight CIAA championship, a 14-1 season and an appearance in the NCAA
Division II national championship game. In three years under Maynor the Rams
are 35-4.
Howard
defensive end Damon Gresham Chisholm is the Boxtorow Rookie of the
Year. Also the MEAC's Rookie of the Year, he led the MEAC with 18 tackles for
loss, registered five sacks and 41 tackles (28 solo). It is the second year in
a row that a Howard player was named rookie of the year. Last year it was
quarterback Greg McGhee.
The
breakdown in representation from the conferences includes nine from the SWAC,
six from the CIAA, five from the MEAC, four from the SIAC, and three from
Tennessee State (OVC).
