RALEIGH, N.C. – Both Bethune-Cookman tennis teams advanced to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament semifinals with quarterfinals wins Friday.
The Lady Wildcats downed Howard 4-2 while the Wildcat men upset Morgan State 4-0. Each team will face their South Carolina State counterpart Saturday with the women taking the courts at 8:30 a.m. and the men at noon.
WOMEN'S RECAP
After getting eliminated by Howard (6-7) in the quarterfinals last seasons, the Lady Wildcats (15-11) won a tightly-contested match for their first semifinals appearance since 2010.
B-CU took the doubles point, and Gaby Chinchilla and Ancia Ifill won their singles matches in straight sets. Howard also won a pair of straight singles matches to keep it close.
Senior Shereen Peterson-Paul clinched the match with a 6-3,5-7,6-3 victory over Umarah Mughee for the deciding fourth point.
MEN'S RECAP
Seeded as the Southern Division's fourth team, the Wildcats (13-15) posted the opening day's big upset with a convincing win over the Bears, the top-seed from the Northern Division.
Leonardo Lima defeated Eric Ward 6-4, 6-4 to win the final point.
