DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman football head coach Brian Jenkins has been
named Coach of the Year by the HBCU Huddle/College Sporting News, recently
releasing its All-America Team. Three fellow Wildcats were named to the
All-America Team in the form of Eugene Solomon and Terrance Hackney on offense,
joined by Harold Love III on the defensive side of the ball.
Brian Jenkins, recently
completing his third year at the helm of the B-CU football program, is now
receiving his third end-of-year award, already picking up Coach of the Year
accolades from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), in addition to being
named AFCA FCS Region Two Coach of the Year. In just three seasons with the
Maroon and Gold, he has helped lead the Wildcats to two MEAC titles (2010, '12)
and two NCAA FCS Playoff appearances (2010, '12). This past season, he led the
Cats to their first 8-0 MEAC mark in school history and the first unblemished
league record for B-CU since 1984.
Since his arrival in Daytona Beach, Jenkins has
compiled an overall record of 27-8, and an unprecedented 21-3 mark in league
play. The Wildcats finished
the season as the only ranked HBCU program in the Sports Network FCS College
Football Poll Top 25, coming in at No. 22 on the list. The Cats have also won
their last 13 consecutive MEAC contests dating back to the midway point of the
2011 campaign.
Terrance Hackney and Eugene Solomon were each
named to the All-America Team on offense, while defensive lineman Harold Love
III made his way onto the team for his side of the ball.
For Hackney, a 6-6, 310-pound offensive lineman,
the All-America nod is the fourth of its kind for the sophomore transfer from
Ole Miss. A native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Hargrave Military Academy
alum, Hackney also claimed MEAC
Offensive Lineman of the Year honors following the regular season.
As for Solomon, the
All-America Team accomplishment is his first this season. A 6-4, 270-pound senior
center from Savannah, Georgia (Jenkins HS), Solomon contributed to the
Bethune-Cookman offensive line, along with Hackney, in several areas of rushing
and pass protection.
On the year, the two
helped anchor a Wildcats offensive line unit that paved
the way for a league-leading 4,665 yards of total offense. That total includes
a league-leading 2,928 yards on the ground. Together, their blocking exploits
were instrumental in placing Bethune-Cookman atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference (MEAC) in scoring offense (29.4 points per game).
A transfer from Feather River College and native
of Portland, Oregon, Harold Love III stands 6-3, 325-pounds and was a force
along a defensive unit for B-CU that ranked at or near the top in several team
categories. He finished fifth on the Wildcats squad in total tackles, amassing
55 on the campaign - 20 of those unassisted. He also picked up a season
third-best seven tackles-for-loss, including three-and-a-half sacks. That goes
along with a team second-best six quarterback hurries, adding a forced fumble
and fumble recovery.
The Bethune-Cookman defense ended the year third
in the MEAC for total defense, as well as seventh nationally at an average of
301.42 yards per game allowed. The Cats allowed just an average of 134.8 yards
per contest on the ground throughout the season, and a pass efficiency grade of
98.8, pitting them in the top three of the league in both categories as well.
That goes along with having the league's best defense on third downs, getting
off the field 69.5 percent of the time. The takeaways for the Wildcats allowed
them to finish ranked third nationally with a +1.50 margin against their
counterparts.
Other awards released by the HBCU Huddle/College
Sporting News All-America Team announcement were the HBCU Program of the Year
(Tennessee State); Offensive Player of the Year (Rico Richardson, Jackson
State); Defensive Player of the Year (Keith Pough, Howard); Freshman of the
Year (Johnta Hebert (Prairie View A&M); and Newcomer of the Year (Isaiah
Crowell, Alabama State).
