READING, Pa. -
The No. 19 Bethune-Cookman University bowling team will travel to Reading,
Pennsylvania this weekend to compete in the Fifth Annual Kutztown Invitational.
The event begins Friday, Jan. 25, running through Sunday, Jan. 27 at Hiester
Lanes.
Fans can catch
all the action live by tuning into BowlTV at Bowl.com, the official website of the
United States Bowling Congress, or YouTube.com/BowlTV as they will
provide free webcasts of the entire event.
Other participating teams this weekend
include Adelphi, Cheyney (Pa.),
Coppin State, Delaware State, Farleigh-Dickinson, Florida A&M, Howard, LIU,
Maryland Eastern Shore, Medaille College, Monmouth, Morgan State, New Jersey
City, Penn State-Altoona, North Carolina Central, Norfolk State, Sacred
Heart, Salem International, St. Francis (Pa.), St. Francis-Brooklyn University,
Stephen F. Austin, St. Peter's, Southern, Valparaiso, Vanderbilt, and Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"This weekend's
event is a 'who's who' tournament," stated B-CU bowling head coach Tony O'Neal.
"Obviously, it's the biggest tournament in the nation. There's a waiting list
each year for this event. And for Bethune-Cookman to be a part of a tournament
of this magnitude, it's definitely a plus for this program."
Bethune-Cookman is coming off a third place
finish last weekend at the Frederick E. Underwood Tournament in Laurel,
Maryland. The Wildcats finished the event with a record of 10-3 overall, and
went to a seventh and deciding game on the final day against fourth-ranked Sam
Houston State.
Senior Staci Hilliard and sophomore Rachel Moore were each tabbed
to the all-tournament team after registering multiple plus-200 games in
Saturday's team competition that allowed the Wildcats to finish 5-0 on the
second day of the event. The Cats were the only unbeaten team on the second day
of the event.
"Last weekend's tournament was a stepping stone for us to show
that we certainly are capable of bowling at a high level," expressed O'Neal. "Now,
we have to see if we have matured enough to continue the pace in which we're
bowling at this time."
The competition
will be stiff as 28 teams from as far as Texas, Wisconsin, and Florida compete
for the KU Invitational title during the three-day event. Fifteen of the
nation's top-20 ranked teams, along with nine of the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference's (MEAC) 13 members will be present.
Friday will start
with six (6) four-game Baker matches beginning at 11 a.m. Total pins on Friday
will determine seeding for Saturday's match schedule only. Saturday will resume
at 9:30 a.m. with six traditional team matches, and Sunday will conclude the
tournament with three best four-of-seven Baker matches position round bracket
style starting at 8:30 a.m.
