DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats are facing their
first conference rematch of the year, in a Homecoming matchup with cross-state
rival Florida A&M, Saturday afternoon at historic Richard V. Moore
Gymnasium. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
Since falling to the Lady Rattlers, 76-60, in Tallahassee
on January 7, the Lady Wildcats have been on the winning track, going 4-2 over
the past three weeks. With a matching record over that span, FAMU has fallen to
North Carolina A&T and Delaware State, while Bethune-Cookman was downed by
South Carolina State and Delaware State (in overtime).
About the Lady Rattlers
At 8-12 (5-2 MEAC) on the season, the Lady Rattlers definitely
hit stride when they reached MEAC play, and are under the continued leadership
of guard Jasmine Grice, who averages 22.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 steals and
3.0 assists per game. For her efforts, Grice ranks sixth in the NCAA in scoring
and seventh in steals. In the first go-around with B-CU she scored 22 and had
five steals.
Providing offensive support is Kimberly Sparkman, a
long-range shooter who ranks seventh in the NCAA in three-pointers per game
(3.2), averaging 15.7 PPG. Sparkman was the difference-maker that separated the
game in Tallahassee, hitting five of her seven field goals from long distance.
Though the two guards score nearly 60 percent of FAMU's
points, they receive support in the post from Patrice Collie and Jamie Forman,
averaging 6.3 PPG/5.4 RPG and 6.0 PPG/7.6 RPG, respectively.
FAMU has continued to be solid at protecting the ball,
holding a 17.0 turnover per game average, while moving up the ranks on steals,
pulling in 10.9 SPG. Slowing down the FAMU offense and limiting open long-range
looks will be a crucial in B-CU's victory plans on Saturday.
About the Lady Wildcats
Bethune-Cookman (9-10, 4-3 MEAC) is coming off two of
the most hard-fought games of the year, in an overtime loss to DSU and a
comeback victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. Chastity René Taylor has scored in double figures
for B-CU in 15 games, averaging 14.6 PPG with 1.9 SPG. Facing FAMU the first
time, Taylor was quiet in the first half, but scored 14 in the second to lead
the team with 18.
Terrenisha Hollis
has come up big lately for the Lady Wildcats, averaging 9.2 PPG and 5.6 rebounds;
she leads the team with 2.3 SPG. Since entering conference play, she has hit
double figures four times (11.6 PPG average) and has double-doubled three
times, including the past two outings. In Tallahassee, she scored nine with
three steals.
The biggest keys
for B-CU in earning the Homecoming victory is protecting the ball and forcing
FAMU into coughing it up. Turnovers were the difference in Tallahassee, as B-CU
gave a season-high 35 turnovers, granting FAMU 37 points.
