Cats Hold Edge after Day One of PGA Minority Championships

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman used opening rounds of 74 from Patrizia Trevisan and Marie Bergelin to help the women's team to an early lead in the Women's Division at the 27th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships presented by Brown Capital Management on Friday at The PGA Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The Wildcats women's team, which played adjacent to the tournament-leading B-CU men's team on the Ryder Course, used a team total of 299, to grab a 10-stroke lead over the University of Texas-Pan American. Chicago State sits in third place at 318 after the opening 18 holes.

As the defending champions in the women's team division, Bethune-Cookman used rounds of 74, respectively, by Trevisan and Bergelin. The matching round scores marks the first time this year that Trevisan and Bergelin have each carded similar round scores after the opening day of a tournament.

In fact, the 74 by Bergelin was a season-best for the Denmark native.

“Both our men's and women's teams came out strong today,” said B-CU head coach Loritz “Scooter” Clark, who is now in his third year at the helm in Daytona Beach. “But there is a long way to go and we don't want to get ahead of ourselves. There are too many good teams out here this week, but we are happy with where we are at right now.”

Also helping the Cats on the day was Andrea Orozco who carded a 75, followed by Estefania Acosta with a 76.

The scoring for B-CU was rounded out by Vanessa Adarme with an opening round 86.

The individual field was highlighted by the play of Kassandra Rivera of Texas Southern that turned in a round of 71. Meanwhile, the shot of the day was turned in by Brooke Foster of Delaware State, who used a 3-hybrid from 161 yards on the seventh hole for an ace.

Play resumes for the second of the three-round event Saturday back at The PGA Club beginning at 9 a.m.
