Johnson Tops Wildcats Performances at GT Invitational

ATLANTA - The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats wrapped up the 2012-13 outdoor track & field regular season this weekend at the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility, competing with hopes to add to the NCAA Regional qualifiers group in the last chance meet at the Georgia Tech Invitational.

Ranking 37th in the East Region in the 100m, freshman Tristie Johnson entered the meet as the Wildcats' lone NCAA Regional qualifier and competed to refine her form in the meet, finishing fifth in Friday's preliminary in 11.88 seconds, following up with a third-place performance in the final at 11.83.

Three Wildcats competed in the men's 100m, with Angelo Cabrera leading the trio with a time of 10.69 to finish 16th in the preliminary. Tremayne Banks finished 22nd (10.75) and Darnell Washington was 25th (10.77).

Banks also competed in the 110m hurdles, narrowly missing the advance to the final in Friday's prelim with a time of 14.38 for ninth, just sixth-hundredths of a second out of the finals group.

Taking on her second meet sporting new poles, Sasha Smallwood rose above her mark at the MEAC Outdoor Championships with an eighth place finish at 3.55m (11-07.75 ft.).

La'Quan Howard turned in a ninth place mark of 14.46m (47-05.25 ft.) in the triple jump, just ahead of Jimel Wright in 11th at 14.14m (46-04.75 ft.).

Keron Stoute competed in the high jump but didn't make height.

Despite putting in improved marks for the late season push, no Wildcats join Johnson in advancing to the NCAA Division I East Regional Preliminary Round in Greensboro, N.C., with competition running May 23-25.

“It was definitely not the outcome I anticipated,” Head Coach Donald Cooper said. “I knew it was going to be tough coming off a rough week at conference, so it will be our freshman, Johnson, that will represent us at the NCAA meet.”
