DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Complimenting the three Lady Wildcat signees picked up in the early signing period, Bethune-Cookman women’s basketball has signed four additional players for the 2012 class, with three guards and a forward coming to make their debut in Maroon and Gold this fall.

Head Coach Vanessa Blair added notable players from across the country to build the future of the Lady Wildcats and bolster depth in both the backcourt and the post, with the signing of Deja Gibson, Terrenisha Hollis, April Johnson, and Chastity Taylor.

Gibson comes to B-CU from Severn High School out of Bowie, Md. Ranked 29th in Real Basketball Reports’ regional standings, the 5’9” guard averaged 14 points per game in her senior season.

“She possesses three-point range, and will give us more depth at that position,” said Coach Blair, “and she also has the ability to play point guard.”

Hollis adds greater depth and talent in the post, in addition to collegiate playing experience, coming in as a 6’0” forward from Jones County Junior College. In her sophomore season with the JCJC Bobcats, she averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game. Hollis is originally from Wenonah High School in Birmingham, Ala., where she was Second Team All State and a Regional Honorable Mention honoree.

“She’s a four player, face-up forward that gets to the rim well, is aggressive on the rebound, and she’ll add more depth for us at the four position,” Blair said.

Coming out of Renaissance High School in Detroit, Mich., Johnson will play the point guard position. An ESPN HoopGurlz four-star and first team All-Conference player, the 5’9” guard averaged 18 PPG in her senior year. She also played for the Michigan Crossover AAU program.

“She will add depth at the point guard position, which is what we need,” Blair said. “She is a vocal point guard, she is up-tempo, and she is able to penetrate and attack the basket to score.”

Rounding out the latest group of Lady Wildcat signees, Taylor joins B-CU from Panola Junior College, originally hailing from Desoto, Texas. At 5’8”, this Region 14 All-Conference player averaged 15 PPG in her sophomore season at PJC. She’s also proven to be a strong competitor in the classroom, named Region 14 Academic All Conference as well.

“She’s a left-handed guard coming to us with two years of experience in the JUCO realm. An all-around guard, but her best asset is her long-range shooting ability,” Blair said. “She is deadly from three-point range. She’ll add to us a much-needed position player after losing Jalisa Isaac.”

The latest round of signees join the early group of Kailyn Williams, Jeri Crane, and Taylor Houston, in addition to Eastern Kentucky transfer Shakeyia Colyer, looking to build a formidable group of Lady Wildcats in Vanessa Blair’s fifth season at the helm.
