WINNING ATTIRE: B-CU-Sponsored Youth Softball Team Wins
ORANGE CITY, Fla. - Wearing uniforms and equipment previously used by Bethune-Cookman teams that had won Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships, a girls 11-12 year softball squad won the District 19 Major Division championship this week in DeBary, Fla.
These "Wildcats" compiled a 4-0 record during the district championship, giving up just nine runs during the tournament. Pitcher Laney Bates registered two complete game victories and surrendered just one earned run in 12 innings of work.
The B-CU athletic department donated jerseys previously worn by the 2009 MEAC champion softball squad while the seven-time champion baseball team chipped in belts and socks.
"Maybe there was some residual energy remaining in that equipment that helped this team win a championship," said B-CU Athletic Director Lynn W. Thompson. "We're delighted that we could contribute this kind of sponsorship to a deserving youth team and wish them continued success."
The next stop for the "Little Wildcats" is a sectional tournament in Rockledge, Fla. on July 14th.
