DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman's Krysta Gardner has been named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball All-Conference Preseason team, it was announced today.

The senior from Ashburn, Va. , set the school record single-season record with 479 kills and finished seventh in the nation in aces per set (.52) in 2011. She earned All-MEAC First Team  honors, the first for a B-CU player since 1999.

With 821 career kills, Gardner is within striking distance of the B-CU all-time record of 1,060 set  by Melissa  Sanders in 2001-04.

Second-year coach Isaac Raphael is looking for more than stats from Gardner.

"We've named Krysta our captain and I'm looking for leadership as she helps carry what will be a young team," Raphael said. "Krysta was outstanding last year and I hope she can play at an even higher level in 2012."

Gardner was named along with Maryland Eastern Shore's Saitaua Iosia (Preseason Player of the Year) and Jessica Visic, Florida A&M's Karol Marquez, Desire Walker of South Carolina State and Charlotte Armstead of Norfolk State.

Team-wise, Bethune-Cookman was selected by MEAC coaches and sports information directors to finish third in the Southern division behind Florida A&M and South Carolina State.

"I'll take it - it's preseason," Raphael said. "The plan is to first challenge Florida A&M for the divisional title and then UMES for the conference championship."

B-CU finished 13-19 in 2011, advancing to the MEAC tournament semifinals.
