DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --  There's no sibling rivalry or family tradition overshadowing Aria Cormier.

Her older sister, Irie, played here from 2002-05 and left the family name throughout the program record book as the single-game service ace leader and third on the all-time digs list.

Stats hardly come up during sisterly chats, though. The focus on is Aria's development as a middle blocker and her matriculation at B-CU.

"Irie asks me how I am and how I'm progressing as a player," Aria said. "We never talk what about she did [during her playing days]."

Aria transferred after her brother-in-law informed her there was an opportunity to play at B-CU. Some family lines are important.

"It was a big factor," Aria said. "I saw what Irie did and even though she had a different coach, I saw the progress she made while she was here. This is where I want to be."

Head Coach Isaac Raphael thinks the Cormiers may be the start of a volleyball tradition at B-CU.

"A lot of the players have younger siblings and some of them have shown interest in the program," Raphael said. "It's nice to know we have that culture here and I'm excited to see what's going to happen in the future.

For now, the focus is Aria's play as a middle blocker. The Lady Cats lost starter Linda Nwabuko to graduation last season.

"It's been rough at first, but I'm learning the position," Aria said. "The hardest thing is transition; coming down from a block and making a hit where I'm supposed.

Raphael's pleased with Aria's effort.

"She's playing with a lot of heart. She's 5-8 and plays 6-3," Raphael said. "Even though we have more size this year, Aria's going to give the taller players a run for their money."

Aria is a role player on this team and her stats probably will be quiet in the box score. It's the stuff that isn't in the box that Raphael likes the most.

"Attitude and enthusiasm," Raphael said. "She does the little things on the court and the important off the court, putting the time in the weight room, making the effort in practice and making great grades. That's what you want."
