WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Bethune-Cookman men's doubles teams went 4-4 to open the C.L. Varner Memorial tournament Friday morning at Rollins College.

The teams of Gilbert Kibet/Leo Lima, Moritz Pronath/Kip Jackson  and Santiago Lobelo/Diego Garavito advanced to the second round of the "B" flight while Juan Varon/Seve Day took a victory in the "A" flight.

Lobelo, Garvito and Pronath won "C" flight single matches  and Kibet a "D" flight win before rain suspended play Friday afternoon.

Pronath was originally not scheduled to compete this weekend to heal a torn meniscus, but decided to play anyway and registered a 6-2, 6-7,10-8 victory over Oscar Axelsson of Lander.

"He said 'I have a winning streak going,''' B-CU Head Coach Tim Pleasant said of Pronath, who won a flight last week at the HBCU Nationals. "The kid's tough as nails and just gutted it out. He's not moving that great due to the knee, so he outsmarted his opponent. It was a nice win that came from guts and heart."

Chinatsu Kajiwara registered the lone B-CU women's victory of the abbreviated opening day, downing Hanna Goettsching of Flagler 6-2,6-3.
