Hairston Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week
NORFOLK, Va. – Coming off the big win for the Lady Wildcats, 71-61, over Florida Atlantic last week, one Bethune-Cookman player received due recognition for her performance. Officials from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced Amanda Hairston as the MEAC Defensive Player off the Week on Monday.
A 6-0 junior center, Hairston was the Lady Wildcats leader in games last week against Jacksonville and FAU, grabbing 16 rebounds, blocking nine opponent shots, along with five steals, while only averaging 2.5 turnovers on the week.
Against FAU, Hairston recorded career highs in blocks (5) and steals (3).
Not only was she a strong defensive performer, but Hairston also led B-CU offensive, putting up 30 points on 75 percent shooting from the floor (12-for-16).
This is the Lady Wildcats’ first conference honor of the 2012-13 season, and Hairston’s first since being twice named as MEAC Rookie of the Week and earning a spot on the MEAC All-Rookie team in 2010-11.
The Lady Wildcats (2-1) travel to DeLand on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff with Atlantic Sun Conference, and cross-county foe, Stetson (1-2).
