Women's Basketball Game Day: South Carolina State
ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The Lady Wildcats (7-8, 2-1 MEAC) take the road for their fourth Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest, heading to the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center to take on the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State (10-5, 2-2 MEAC), carrying a two-game MEAC winning streak and every game carrying greater weight toward post-season implications.
About the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs
The Lady Bulldogs have won three of their last five and have not claimed any victories when scoring less than 60 points. SCSU has shown the ability to put points on the board, with three games scoring in the 70's and a game each in the 80's and 90's, in addition to an NCAA 88th-ranked +7.1 scoring margin.
Senior guard Tiara Knotts is the clear leader for the Lady Bulldogs, averaging in double figures with 15.3 per contest and ranking seventh in the MEAC in scoring. Knotts also leads the Lady Bulldogs with 1.8 three-pointers per game (.333), 2.7 free throws per game and 2.7 steals per game (48th NCAA, 2nd MEAC). In all but one of SCSU's losses, Knotts has continued to score in double figures, but the remaining Lady Bulldogs were unable to get on the board.
Sophomore Ashley Clarke joins Knotts in double digits at 11.0, but has only been on the court for the past two games, facing MEAC foes Morgan State and Coppin State, hitting 33.3 percent from the field and putting in 8.0 RPG through those games.
Center Paris Alston scores 8.8 points per game on 48 percent shooting, leading the team long-term with 7.8 boards per outing, along with 1.3 blocks per game, but has been out of action and is not expected to see the court against B-CU. The load will fall to Clarke and Fannie Goodwin (6.5 RPG, 2.2 BPG).
Much like previous opponent North Carolina A&T, South Carolina State does a great job of protecting the ball, allowing just 15.8 turnovers per game, spreading the floor with 12.9 assists. B-CU topped the Aggies by pushing them way beyond their average with extensive pressure.
About the Lady Wildcats
The Lady Wildcats have cut to within one game of the .500 mark with two straight MEAC wins, but are looking to snap the road losing skid, currently at 0-6 on the season.
The past two victories have been a product of a greater team effort, with junior forward/guard Terrenisha Hollis averaging a double-double of 11.5 PPG/10.5 RPG (8.5 PPG/5.1 RPG on season) in that span. Joining her in the aid, junior point guard Shakeyia Colyer has chipped in 9.5 PPG and 3.5 APG (6.1 PPG/1.9 APG on season) across the two games.
The pair draw focus and defensive pressure off the B-CU leaders, guard Chastity René Taylor and center Amanda Hairston. Taylor ranks eighth in the MEAC with 14.9 points per game, hitting 2.5 threes per game (43rd NCAA, 2nd MEAC), while also grabbing 1.9 steals per outing. Hairston owns three of B-CU's four double-doubles on the year, averaging 10.2 points and team-highs of 7.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
The Wildcats defensive pressure is going to be a factor, as they work to hold opponents beneath 50 points per game, and the Lady Wildcats are 4-1 when holding opponents under 60 points.
