Women's Basketball Game Day: Delaware State
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats (8-9, 3-2 MEAC) are looking to capitalize on the momentum of earning the first road win on the season at Savannah State. Bethune-Cookman returns for a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) homestand, opening Saturday (Jan. 26) with Delaware State (5-11, 2-1 MEAC) at 2 p.m., and capped next Saturday (Feb. 2) with a homecoming rematch with Florida A&M. B-CU has won five of the last six outings against the Lady Hornets and look to extend the current streak to four.
About the Delaware State Lady Hornets
The DSU game is very centered in the post, playing with three forwards, and the Lady Hornets are led by redshirt sophomore forward Tierra Hawkins in both scoring and on the boards. Hawkins averages 17.7 points (4th MEAC, 52nd NCAA) on 48.3 percent shooting, along with 6.7 rebounds per game. However, Hawkins shoots just 60.4 percent from the free throw line.
Aiding Hawkins from the wing, Tasia Bristow also logs double figures, logging 11.3 PPG in addition to 3.2 APG, while leading the team in steals (2.3 SPG).
Fellow forwards Kianna D'Oliveira and Keyanna Tate average 4.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG and 7.0 PPG, 5.9 RPG, respectively. D'Oliveira leads the team in blocks with 1.1 BPG.
DSU is a capable offensive team, but have had struggles with giving up larger opponent totals, trailing by a -7.3 scoring margin this season. The Lady Hornets score 59.2 points per game, as compared with B-CU's 59.9, so the contest could prove to be a defensive shootout.
About the Lady Wildcats
Chastity René Taylor has been her usual consistent force for Bethune-Cookman, collecting her 13th double-figure scoring performance Monday at Savannah State. Taylor averages 14.7 PPG, but has been hitting the boards of late, with 13 in the past two outings, in back-to-back career rebounding performances.
Terrenisha Hollis has been a notable force for B-CU recently, tallying 32 points, with 18 rebounds, in the past three contests. Point guard Shakeyia Colyer has also made an impact, with 17 rebounds and 10 assists the past three games.
MEAC teams have clearly tabbed center Amanda Hairston as a major focus, keying in and limiting her to just 12 points and 12 rebounds, however, Hairston averages 10.7 PPG, 1.9 BPG and 7.3 RPG in the friendly confines of Moore Gym.
The Lady Wildcats look to lean to their strength and force DSU into miscues, allowing B-CU to limit their scoring and force turnovers. Making the crucial layups and free throws are a commodity at home and will go a long way toward spelling a B-CU victory on Saturday.
