DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Ricky Johnson's free throw with 2.1 seconds remaining gave Bethune-Cookman a 58-57 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Monday night.

The Hawks (1-15 overall, 1-5 MEAC) tied the game on a Kevin Mays lay-up with 18 seconds remaining. The Wildcats (8-14,3-4) used the last possession to set up a Johnson drive, and the sophomore was fouled going to the basket.

UMES had one desperation shot, but Ishaq Pitt's 75-footer bounced off the backboard.

Adrien Coleman scored 17 points for Bethune-Cookman, which trailed most of the first half, but managed to lead by seven points on two occasions in the second, 51-44 on a Paul Scotland three-pointer with 6:04 remaining and 53-46 on a Alex Smith dunk with 4:32 to play.

Johnson had 11 points, Kevin Dukes nine and Alex Smith six points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Mays had a double-double of 20 points, 11 rebounds for the Hawks.

HEAD COACH GRAVELLE CRAIG

"We just needed to win to get our confidence up. We missed four free throws and had four turnovers in the final two minutes. We need to be better at finishing."

"That last UMES shot looked good. When it left his hand it was on target."

"I honestly think we've got a run in us the second half [of conference play]. Florida A&M on Saturday will be a big game."

ADRIEN COLEMAN

"We were spacing the floor and Ricky was going to attack the basket and get to the line. He's one of our best free throw shooters."

RICKY JOHNSON

"This was an important win. We had a team meeting before the game, and we discussed playing harder and more as a team."
