Johnson Named MEAC Player Of The Week
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman University guard Ricky Johnson was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference player of the week, it was announced today [Monday, February 4, 2013].
The 5-9 sophomore from Akron, Ohio, scored the game-winning points for the Wildcats in both their games last. On Monday, he made a free throw with 2.1 seconds remaining in a 58-57 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore and on Saturday hit a running jumper with one second left in overtime for a 67-65 comeback win over Florida A&M that capped off his career-high 25 point scoring effort.
Johnson, who has scored double-figures in his last three games is averaging 7.9 points per game (11.0 in conference play) and 3.2 rebounds for the season. His free throw percentage of .803 is seventh in the conference.
As a freshman, Johnson earned two conference rookie of the week honors during the 2011-12. This is his first award of the season and sixth for the Wildcats - -Adrien Coleman has been named MEAC player of the week three times and Alex Smith defensive player of the week twice.
The Wildcats (9-14 overall, 4-4 MEAC) return to action on Saturday, February 9 at North Carolina A&T.
