Hampton Handles Lady Wildcats 74-28
HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton lived up to its status as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's undefeated regular season champ Monday as the Lady Pirates downed Bethune-Cookman 74-28.
Keiara Avant and Nicole Hamilton each scored 14 points as the Lady Pirates (24-5 overall, 15-0) handed the Lady Wildcats (12-15,7-9 MEAC) their worst loss of the season. Hampton, the three-time regular season champ, won its 15th straight.
"They [Hampton] are a tough team to play," said B-CU Head Coach Vanessa Blair. "They play relentless man-to-man defense for 40 minutes and everyone who comes off the bench keeps up the energy."
B-CU trailed 11-8 with 14:53 left in the first half, before six straight points put Hampton up 17-8 after a layup from Avant at the 12:05 mark. Rene Chastity Taylor answered with a jumper with 11:41 left in the half - a basket that wound up being B-CU's last field goal of the half.
Sharnese Neal cut Hampton's lead to 20-12 with a pair of free throws at the 7:44 mark, but the Lady Pirates answered with a 15-0 run to take a 35-12 lead with 2:43 left in the half.
Shakeyia Colyer hit two free throws to cut the lead to 35-14 at the 2:12 mark. Hampton led 37-14 at halftime and started the second half with a 12-3 run.
Neal was the lone B-CU player in double figures with 12 points, including 6-6 from the line. Taylor finished with six points and nine rebounds, while Colyer had five points and six rebounds.
B-CU concludes the regular season Thursday at Coppin State.
