DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bethune-Cookman University football team will conclude its spring season with the third annual Spring Showcase on Saturday, April 20, at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex beginning at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $1 with all proceeds going to the New Smyrna Beach Pop Warner League.

The public is invited to attend the family-friendly event with gates opening at 1 p.m. The Spring Showcase is scheduled to include autograph and photo opportunities with staff and players – weather permitting, as well as concessions stands offering food and drink for purchase.

This will be the second time in three years that the Spring Showcase will take place in nearby New Smyrna Beach.

Under the direction of head coach Brian Jenkins, recently completing his third season at the helm in Daytona Beach and sitting as the winningest coach in the state of Florida over that span, Bethune-Cookman is finishing up a 15-practice slate, including Saturday’s Spring Showcase. The Cats began spring practices back on March 23.

According to Jenkins, the team has evolved into a better unit in the 15-practice schedule.

“We wanted to focus on fundamentals, and we worked on timing and developing as a team,” said Jenkins. “We don’t focus on any one particular player during the spring. The staff and I want to get the team together as one unit, and I think we were able to accomplish that task over the past few weeks. Guys were flying around out there all spring, and they really worked hard to better themselves and hold each player accountable for getting better as well.”

Teams for the game were decided Thursday night with the “Player Draft”, utilizing coaches for both teams selecting their players during a live stream on the CatEye Network. Players watched in the Harold V. Lucas Hall of Fame inside the Larry R. Handfield Athletic Training Center, before seeing their names announced and making their way to the second floor to the team room where they met their designated coaches and team.

The season kicks off Sunday, Sept. 1, as the Cats travel to Nashville, Tennessee for a game against Tennessee State.
