B-CU Women Still Lead at PGA Minority Championships
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Sophomore Andrea Orozco fired a round-leading 69 on Saturday to keep the Bethune-Cookman women’s golf team ahead of the field heading into Sunday’s final round at the 27th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships presented by Brown Capital Management at The PGA Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The event is taking place on the Ryder Course.
Leading by 10 strokes after the first day of the tournament, the defending champion Wildcats extended their lead to 13 strokes ahead of second place competitor Texas-Pan American on Saturday. Chicago State sits in third place.
Orozco, a native of Cancun, Mexico, picked up her second under-par round of the year with her three-under 69 on Saturday. The 69 round also marked a career-low, beating her previous low round of 71 set during the fall campaign at the SCSU Bulldog Invitational.
“We wanted to build on our lead and play well as a team,” said Orozco. “I hit a lot of wedges into greens, hit it close and made some good birdies.”
Orozco will tee off with the tournament leaders group in Sunday’s final round alongside Sarah Kothny (UTPA), Brooke Melvin (Chicago State) and Nicole Rafer (Delaware State) off the 10th tee at 9:40 a.m.
Fellow sophomore Estefania Acosta of Ibagué, Colombia fired a second round 73 to give her a two-day total of 149, while Patrizia Trevisan carded a 74 on Saturday for the Wildcats to bring her to a 36-hole total score of 148.
After firing a 74 on Friday, Marie Bergelin shot a second round 77 on Saturday to bring her overall score to 151. Vanessa Adarme of The Woodlands, Texas posted a score of 98 on Saturday for a two-round total of 184.
Play resumes for the final round on Sunday beginning with the individual group at 7:30 a.m. Teams will start at 8:10 a.m. on the Ryder Course.
