Freshman Ryan Fricker Ready for NCAA Regional Challenge
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman freshman golfer Ryan Fricker will begin his quest for an NCAA title Thursday, May 16, competing in the individual field at the NCAA Tallahassee (Fla.) Regional. Hosted by Florida State, the event runs through Saturday at the Golden Eagles Country Club with teams teeing off each day at 8 a.m.
Admission is free to the three-day 54-hole tournament.
Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
Joining Fricker for the individual field will be No. 87 Sean Bosdosh (Maryland), J.T. Poston (Western Carolina), Maverick Antcliff (Augusta State), Richard Fountain (Davidson), Trey Rule (Mercer), Daniel Walker (Richmond), Edward Figueroa (FGCU), Alex Wennstam (Augusta State) and Hans Reimers (Mercer).
Fricker, a native of Ivybridge, England, currently sits No. 205 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Men’s Collegiate Individual rankings. He also serves as first NCAA competitor from B-CU in the golf field since Phillip Worthington in 2000.
Last weekend, Fricker helped the Wildcats men’s team claim the 27th Annual PGA Minority National Collegiate Golf Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and now looks for a chance to claim the school’s first NCAA individual golf title.
Joining Florida State in the team field is No. 6 Washington, No. 9 Georgia Tech, No. 18 North Florida, No. 25 Oklahoma, No. 40 Wake Forest, No. 44 Oregon, NC State, Oregon State, Iowa, USF, San Diego and Loyola (Maryland).
A total of 81 teams make up the regional field along with 45 individuals. Five teams and the top individual advance to the National Championship at The Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Atlanta, from May 28-June 2.
