Modena Named to Coastal Plain League All-Star Team
“I’m really excited,” Modena said. “I’m glad I can represent Bethune-Cookman in a good way while I’m up here and I’m just going to go out there and enjoy it.”
“I took the stuff that the coaches wanted me to work on,” Modena added, “I’ve been having great at-bats all summer long and learning to be a more consistent baseball player for when I come back.”
Modena has definitely taken advantage of the opportunity, batting .297 through 29 games this summer in the wood-bat league, tallying a team-best six doubles (fourth CPL), one home run and 10 RBI. He also leads the team with 12 stolen bases.
Modena will join the West Division CPL All-Stars in facing off with the East Division squad in the 15th annual CPL All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 8 at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Va.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Further more, the CPL has had nearly 1,100 alumni drafted and 63 alums – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut thus far.
