DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bethune-Cookman men’s golf team will participate in a school-best 14 events during the upcoming fall/spring campaign, as Director of Golf Loritz “Scooter” Clark announced the schedule for the 2013-14 season Wednesday afternoon.

Set to enter his fourth year at the helm in Daytona Beach, Clark was recently promoted to the position of Director of Golf for the men’s and women’s programs by B-CU Director of Athletics Lynn W. Thompson. Clark led the men and women to a sweep of the PGA National Minority Championship last year, and returns all but a single golfer for the upcoming season. The lone golfer departing from last year’s title team is graduated senior Alex Clapp.

On both sides, I did what I typically do,” commented Clark on Wednesday. “In the fall, we go to the northeast with Towson and some others to strengthen us. We’re going to do the same thing this year. These first few tournaments give us the opportunity to play against some top 100 and top 150 teams in the country. It gives us a better strength of schedule to start the fall, while in the spring, I focus on conference tournaments and the MEAC Championship and Showcase.”

In the fall, B-CU will begin a seven-tournament slate at the Rutgers Invitational at the Rutgers University Golf Course (Piscataway, N.J.), September 13-14. The Cats then embark upon tournaments featuring the Adams Cup of Newport (Sept. 16-17), the Stars and Stripes Invitational (Oct. 6-7), Donald Ross Intercollegiate (Oct. 14-15), Cobra Puma Invitational (Oct. 27-28), Stetson/CFSC Invitational (Nov. 4-5) and the SSU Tiger Fall Invitational (Nov. 9-10).

As tradition dictates, Bethune-Cookman opens the spring season hosting more than 12 teams to this year’s B-CU Gary Freeman Spring Invitational. The event will once again be held at the Halifax Plantation Golf Club, Feb. 15-17, in Ormond Beach, Fla.

B-CU finishes the spring with tournaments at the Don Benbow Invitational (Mar. 10-11), Mission Inn Spring Spectacular (Mar. 15-16), FAU Spring Break Invitational (Mar. 28-30) and the FAMU Spring Invitational (Apr. 4-5).

For the first time in history, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will host a conference tournament, set to take place Apr. 25-27, at the LPGA International Golf Resort in Daytona Beach, Fla. Bethune-Cookman has the honor of hosting the inaugural end-of-year conference event. The winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

B-CU will conclude the regular season portion of its schedule at the PGA National Minority Championships in Port St. Lucie, Fla. (May 9-11).

The Cats welcome a single newcomer to the roster, while bringing back six golfers, including Rafael Abad who missed the spring campaign. Also back is Ryan Fricker who earned the school’s first at-large individual invitation to the NCAA Regionals since 1999 a season ago.
