@BCUVolleyball Game Central: FAU Invitational
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman opens its 2013 volleyball season Friday with two matches at the Florida Atlantic Invitational.
The Wildcats (5-28 last season) face Jacksonville in the tournament’s opening match Friday at 10 a.m. and return to action at 4:30 p.m. against Southeast Louisiana. B-CU meets host FAU Saturday at 3 p.m.
B-CU UPDATE: The Wildcats are one of the youngest teams in the nation this season, with eight of the ten rostered players being either a sophomore or a freshman … Junior Aria Cormier and senior Jennifer Jimenez are the lone upperclassmen … Jimenez begins the season 127 digs away from the 1,000 career mark; she’s already the program’s all-time leader in that category.
ABOUT JACKSONVILLE: The Dolphins were 10-24 last season… Jacksonville leads the series 34-1 … Gabriela Roman competed for the Puerto Rican Junior National team in the Junior World Championship June 21 to 30 in the Czech Republic.
ABOUT SE LOUISIANA: First meeting between the teams. First-year Head Coach Jim Smoot took the 1982 and 1983 Ohio State men’s teams to Final Four appearances and Westmont (Calif.) to the 1999 NAIA Final Four … Southeastern returns three starters and libero Megan McMillin, an honorable mention for the All-Southland team last season, from a squad that finished 11-19 (5-13 Southland)
ABOUT FAU: The Owls (7-19 in 2012) have 12 new players this season. The lone senior is Darija Sataric, an outside hitter who averaged 2.68 kills per set last season. FAU leads the series 24-0.
