Cross Country Opens 2013 Season Friday at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman cross country opens its season on Friday (Aug. 30) evening, making the annual trip to Jacksonville for the JU Short Course Duals. Featuring a largely experienced roster, the Wildcats look to make the most of running on the very familiar course.
The season-opening meet takes place on the campus of Jacksonville University with short course distances of 3.7k for the women and 5.13k for the men. The women will open competition at 6 p.m., with the men following at 6:25 p.m.
“This meet in Jacksonville is usually just an opener for us to shake the dust off and get our athletes into that type of competition,” Head Coach Donald Cooper said.
The Wildcats return six runners from last season to open the 2013 campaign on the men’s side and five for the women, bringing a lot of experience into the equation, particularly on the JU course.
“The athletes, in general, will feel the need to go out and be aggressive, and try to make sure that their performances outmatch the performances they had last year,” Cooper noted.
Leading the team into the season opener are junior Ricy Brown and senior Kirsten Taylor.
Brown led the Wildcats in last year’s JU meet, finishing eighth on a then-5.1k course in a time of 17:29.4.
With the graduation of MEAC runner-up and 2011 champion Kadian Dunkley, Taylor takes the reins as B-CU’s top women’s returner. Taylor finished 17th in last year’s then-3.69k JU race at 15:41.7. Finishing just behind Taylor last year in 18th (16:07.2), junior Morgan Brown could also prove to be a factor in B-CU’s scoring this season.
The squad gains three newcomers, with Jamel Davis and Jamaal James joining the men, and Nyajock Pan coming aboard for the women.
