BOCA RATON, Fla. – Delicia Pierre posted a double-double of 15 kills and 10  digs as Bethune-Cookman opened its 2013 season with a 3-1 (26-24,25-13,23-25,16-10) loss to Jacksonville at the FAU Invitational Friday morning.

The sophomore from Trinidad and Tobago also matched her career high for blocks (five) and added two service aces for the Wildcats, who had a late lead in the opening set and rallied from a 17-12 deficit to take set three.

A three-point Rhea Simon service run brought B-CU back into contention. After managing ties at 20-20 and 21-21, Pierre registered two kills to help the Wildcats pull away.

In the first set, B-CU saw an early 5-1 lead fade, but a five-point Destiny Hudson service run turned a 20-17 deficit into a 22-20 lead. B-CU led again at 23-22 on a service error, but the Dolphins closed the set by scoring four of the final five points.

Simon finished with  eight kill, five digs and two service aces for  B-CU. Phylecia Armstrong added four kills and a career-high six blocks,  and Hudson posted four kills. Freshman setter Alexa Thomas finished with 24 kills and eight digs, while another freshman, Normarie Rolon, shared the team digs lead with Jennifer Jimenez at 11.

B-CU faces SE Louisiana at 4:30 p.m.

HEAD COACH ISAAC RAPHAEL

“This was the best opening match we’ve had since I’ve been here. Getting it to four sets gave us more experience that should help us.

[ON REGISTERING 15 BLOCKS]

“Our defense picked up as we went along. This was our best blocking match overall."

[ON DELICIA PIERRE]

"She’s a weapon."

DELICIA PIERRE

“Today was a learning experience. It was nice to get a  feel for  each other on the court, but we have a lot to work on."

[ON HER BLOCKS AND SERVING]

“I know to block. I just would look at the hitter and go “All right, I’m going to get this ball. My jump serve is coming along as well.”

[ON ACCEPTING HER ROLE AS AN OFFENSIVE LEADER]

"Any task they appoint me I will welcome with open arms."

NOTES:  This was Pierre’s second career double-double.  She had also a career-high  38 attempts.
