@BCUvolleyball Game Day: Stetson Westin Classic

DELAND, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman heads over to nearby DeLand this weekend to participate in Volusia County rival Stetson’s Westin Classic beginning Friday evening.

The Ladycats (0-3) meet Stetson Friday at 7 p.m., then have a 9 a.m. Saturday morning contest with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Savannah State and conclude play at 1p.m. against Providence.

B-CU dropped matches to Jacksonville, SE Louisiana and FAU last weekend at the FAU Invitational and is looking to snap an 18-match losing in tournaments dating back to 2011.

B-CU UPDATE: Senior Jennifer Jimenez closed to within 104 digs of the 1,000 career mark last weekend. She had 25 digs on Stetson’s court in 2011 when B-CU downed Wofford in a tournament game … Sophomore Rhea Simon had a pair of 8-kill matches last week at FAU and had a career-high 38 attempts against FAU … Delicia Pierre is 6th in the MEAC in scoring (3.2 points per set) and t7th in service aces; Alexas Thomas is 6th in assists ( 6.3).

ABOUT STETSON (1-3): The Hatters defeated Drake for their lone victory at UniWyo Wyoming Invitational last week. Kaley Melville leads Stetson with 62 kills while setter Kayla Weller is averaging 10.8 assists per set. Stetson leads the all-time series 50-4 and has won the last six meetings.

ABOUT SAVANNAH STATE (0-3): The Tigers dropped matches to Fordham, Tennessee Tech and Winthrop in the Winthrop Classic last weekend. Gabrielle Nathaniel and Bryana Gadis are both in the double digits with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. B-CU has won all 25 matches in the series.

ABOUT PROVIDENCE (2-2) : The Friars are coming off of a 3-0 victory against Quinnipiac Wednesday night. Last weekend, the team went 1-2 in the DePaul Invitational. Junior Annie Russian was named to the DePaul Invitational All-Tournament Team while freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) was named America East Rookie of the Week Tuesday. B-CU and Providence split two meetings in 2010.
