@BCUVolleyball Game Central: SSU and SCSU

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman plays its final home matches of the 2013 season this Friday against Savannah State and Sunday against South Carolina State. Match times are 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

Friday’s match is a “Dig Pink” affair designed to heighten Breast Cancer Awareness and Sunday’s home finale is Senior Day honoring the lone senior, Jennifer Jimenez.

It’s also the start of the second half of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division play. Florida A&M made the turn undefeated at 5-0, with B-CU and North Carolina A&T tied for second at 3-2, one match ahead of South Carolina State and North Carolina Central. Savannah State’s in sixth place with an 0-5 mark.

B-CU UPDATE (4-22,3-2): The Lady Cats have lost six straight – five of those non-conference. Rhea Simon has returned from a foot injury and recorded a nine-kill, four-ace Monday at Delaware State.

Delicia Pierre has dipped to fifth in the MEAC in kills per set (3.23) aces and fourth in service aces (.43).

Freshman setter Alexas Thomas is fifth in assists in overall matches (8.52), and is second (10.56) in league games. Simon’s .71 aces per set in conference play is top in the MEAC, while Jimenez (.56) is third in that category and sixth (3.44) in digs.

Thomas currently has 699 assists for the season, seventh best in program history. She needs 69 to pass Shironda Trotter’s 2001 total of 767 for sixth.

ABOUT SSU:  The Tigers (0-24,0-5) dropped non-conference decisions to The Citadel and Alabama State since conference play. Bryana Gadis leads SSU with 101 kills. B-CU won the first meeting 3-0 on Sept. 29.

ABOUT SCSU: The Bulldogs (3-18,2-3) beat Alabama A&M 3-2 during the MEAC downtime.  The Bulldogs lost their last two MEAC matches.  MEAC Player of The Year Desire Waller has registered 285 kills this season and also leads the teams with 159 digs. B-CU came within one point of winning the first match on Sept. 27.
