About the Eagles
After a slow start, the North Carolina Central Eagles have shot to the top of the standings in the MEAC Southern division, and prior to a pair of midweek losses to Duke and UNC Wilmington, NCCU was on a five game win streak. The Eagles have won four consecutive conference contests.

As the season has moved beyond the midpoint, the Eagles have proven both capable hitters and scorers, putting up 9.0 hits per outing, with 5.5 runs per game. However, NCCU’s 6.15 team ERA and 62 errors have created challenges along the way.

Third baseman Tyson Simpson has proven to be a steady source of offense for the Eagles in 2014, but did not appear in midweek games for NCCU. He’s leading the team with a .381 average and 43 hits, including a team-best 10 doubles. Simpson has also batted in 28 runs and scored 25.

Catcher/designated hitter Carter Williamson is also a solid hitter for the Eagles, batting .342 with a team-high 29 RBI, while scoring 22 runs. Williamson has also recorded seven doubles and three homers. Leadoff hitter Zach Lee bats .326 with a team-leading 34 runs scored.

About the Wildcats
The last time these teams met, the Wildcats took the series opener, but fell in the following pair to drop the series for the Eagles.

The Wildcats registered big hits in five games last week, but struggled this midweek to stay consistent. After a pair of in-state midweek losses, the Wildcats look to get back to a strong showing at the plate.

That shift may lead to first baseman Eric Sams, who tops the team with a .364 average and 47 hits, including 11 doubles. He’s scored 29 runs and batted in 14 more for the Wildcats, leading the team with a .439 on-base percentage. Last week, he batted .500 with multiple hits in five straight games.

Also topping the Wildcats, left fielder Eros Modena bats .317 with 39 hits and a team-leading 18 RBI. Second baseman Matt Noble is hitting .306 with 34 hits, 18 runs and 13 RBI on the year.

In addition, the Wildcats will look to the strength of the weekend rotation. While the Wildcats hold an already-tough team ERA of 3.38, the Wildcats’ ERA is 2.19 with these starters on the mound.
