Two @CookmanTrack Athletes Named USTFCCCA All-Academic
NEW ORLEANS – The Bethune-Cookman track and field program received two academic honors on Tuesday (July 22) from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Freshmen Kenneth Fisher and Demetrius Rooks were listed among the 496 men named USTFCCCA All-Academic for the 2013-14 track & field season. The pair lead a B-CU men’s team that holds a 2.99 cumulative team GPA, narrowly missing receiving team honors from the USTFCCCA.
“I am extremely proud of our two freshmen, Kenneth Fisher and Demetrius Rooks,” Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Donald Cooper said. “Both young men are tremendous students, as well as athletes, and this award recognizes their relentless efforts at both. It shows that our recruiting is not only for athletic talent but academic ability as well, and my hopes are to continue this trend. We have a great athletic academic support department, which is truly dedicated to the academic success of our student-athletes.”
Fisher was among the group of three Wildcats qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships in June, and opened competition on Wednesday (July 23) as a member of Team USA at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships in the long jump. Fisher earned his Team USA slot with a school-record second place finish at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Championships in early July.
Also a long jumper, Rooks competed in the NCAA Outdoor Championships East Preliminary Round in late May, after finishing second behind Fisher at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships.
Both jumpers provided crucial points in aiding the Bethune-Cookman men’s team to a first-ever MEAC Championship.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards: For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
