DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Bethune-Cookman volleyball  opens its 2014 preseason practice Thursday afternoon at approximately 1:30 p.m. in Historic Moore Gymnasium.

The Lady Wildcats are coming off a 6-27 campaign in 2013 that included a 5-5 record in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. Bethune-Cookman finished third in the MEAC Southern Division before falling to Coppin State in the opening round of the conference tournament.

B-CU will play its intrasquad Maroon and Gold match on Sunday, August 23 and opens the regular season August 29-30 at the Florida Atlantic Invitational facing host FAU, Stetson and McNeese State. The home opener is Friday, September 25 against South Carolina State.

YOU SAY GOODBYE: The Lady Wildcats bade farewell to Jennifer Jimenez, the program’s all-time digs leader with 1,186 and the only player in Lady Wildcat history to surpass the 1,000 dig mark. She was the team’s lone senior in 2013.

AND WE’LL SAY HELLO:  Fourth-year Head Coach Isaac Raphael welcomes three newcomers – junior setter Hazel Ortiz Rosado, a Junior College All-American last season at Monroe (NY) CC along with freshman middle blocker Rakaya Neely and freshman libero Rechez Lindsay.  Neely spent part of the summer playing for Team Florida at the USA Volleyball High Performance National Championships while Lindsay played the Trinidad and Tobago National Team at the Pan American Cup in Mexico City in June.

“D” MEANS “O”: Headlining the returners is junior outside hitter Delicia Pierre, who was named to the MEAC All-Conference 2nd team last season. The 6-2 product from Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago led the MEAC in service aces per set (.55) and finished the regular season ranked fifth in the nation in that category. She also was fifth in kills per set (3.21) and third in points per set (4.05).

Complimented Pierre on offense will be juniors Destiny Hudson and Rhea Simon, who posted 231 and 201 kills, respectively, in 2013.

SETTING SET: Sophomore Alexas Thomas posted 918 assists last season, the second-highest single-season total in program history. Ortiz Rosado’s numbers at Monroe in 2013.: 1,205 assists, 141 service aces and 149 kills. Her service aces average of .91 per set was second in the nation.

NOTES: Also returning this year are sophomores Lauren Turner and Jill Arlaud … sophomore Normarie Rolon also returns after suffering a season-ending injury, but the Lady Wildcats lost junior middle Phylecia Armstrong for the season with a similar injurt during summer workouts … The summer was a productive one for the Lady Wildcats in the classroom: The team was recognized by the America Volleyball Coaches Association with a Team Academic Award for its 3.35 GPA during the 2013-14 academic year while Raphael earned his MBA from UCF Monday.
