@BCUVolleyball Opens Practice
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Bethune-Cookman opened its 2014 preseason volleyball training camp with two practice sessions Thursday in Historic Moore Gymnasium.
Fourth-year Head Coach Isaac Raphael oversaw a large contingent of Lady Wildcats – 12 in all – during the two workouts.
“It’s a full group and we haven’t had that in a while,” Raphael said. “It was nice to see the quality of athlete we have as well.”
B-CU returns junior outside hitter Delicia Pierre, who led the MEAC in service aces per set (.55) and finished the regular season ranked fifth in the nation in that category. She also was fifth in kills per set (3.21) and third in points per set (4.05).
“It’s always good to be back on the court after going through spring and open gym,” Pierre said. “It felt good getting our techniques back. I’ll be bringing the heat and eliminating the mistakes.”
Raphael is expecting juniors Rhea Simon and Destiny Hudson to provide complimentary firepower to Pierre as well as junior college transfer Hazel Ortiz Rosado, though the latter was brought in primarily as a server. Raphael is also looking for the Lady Wildcats to be even stronger at the serving line.
“Rhea has stepped up, and Destiny and Hazel, so we have a good attacking group,” Raphael said. “We will be a strong attacking team and an aggressive serving team. But for now, we’re focusing on defense and our serve-receive game.”
The team will hold its picture day Friday morning. The intrasquad Maroon and Gold Game will take place on Sunday, August 24 at 1 p.m., with the season opener August 29-30 at the Florida Atlantic Invitation against host FAU, Stetson and McNeese State.
