In a game that was a defensive-minded first half, both teams went to the locker room tied at 14. However, the offenses found their rhythm in the second half, with the two teams combining for 81 points.
Bethune-Cookman (1-1) entered the fourth quarter leading 28-27.
Grambling State (0-2) quickly fought back to command a 39-28 lead on the strength of a Chester Rogers 21-yard touchdown run with 11:19 remaining in the final stanza.
The Wildcats switched quarterbacks for the second time in the game, using Quentin Williams under center in an eight-play, 56-yard drive that culminated with sophomore receiver Frank Brown collecting an eight yard dump-off to race around the right edge, cutting into the Tigers lead, 39-34.
Less than two minutes later, the B-CU offense hit its fifth quick strike offensive score of three minutes or less, as Davis was on the receiving end of a 29-yard pass from Williams, giving the visitors from Daytona Beach, Florida a 41-39 advantage with 7:34 remaining. The drive took just 21 seconds for the Wildcats.
Meanwhile, Grambling answered quickly following an eight-play, 70-yard drive, capped by Martez Carter's 35-yard run around the left side, giving the Tigers a 46-41 edge.
B-CU's Davis struck again with his second touchdown grab of the day as he accepted a 28-ayrd pass from Williams in the right corner of the end zone, putting B-CU on top for good, 49-46 – following the successful two-point conversion from Williams to Jontavious Carter.
The game was tied at 14 at the half and remained close throughout.
Quentin Williams completed 17 of 22 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns while Brihm was 17-of-26 for 219 yards and three scores.
Johna Williams threw for 326 yards on 30-of-47 passing for Grambling.
Bethune-Cookman returns to action next weekend, hosting Lane College in the team's home-opener of the 2015 campaign. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m., at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach.
